ENTER THE DRAGON WITH A BANG !
Considered to be one of the most important holidays in the traditional Chinese calendar, the Lunar New Year or Chinese New year is celebrated worldwide. Here at school, we anticipated the arrival of the auspicious dragon year throughout the entire Friday, 20th January. Utilising the most fundamental of Chinese customary beliefs which are practised on this special day, our international community was given a clear understanding of its symbolic importance. The display of welcoming lanterns hung at the foyer blended in with the customary Chinese attire worn by the Primary children. Starting off the morning with performances from each year level’s Mandarin class, a surprise appearance from the majestic golden dragon created by Year 8 not only stunned everyone present, but certainly built up the pulse for the rest of the day’s program. At the Early Years complex, a Chinese Tea party, without the tea, was set, overflowing with a buffet of dim sum, noodles and desserts for the younger ones to feast on. FoStA (Friends of St Andrews or the Parent-Teacher group) distributed red envelopes containing chocolate gold coins to all students guaranteeing their prosperity luck. However, the biggest event of the day was held on the school grounds in the evening when both St Andrews Sukhumvit 107 and Sathorn families and their friends gathered together to welcome the lucky dragon year’s arrival. Retail stalls, a bouncy castle, face paint, British Club food and drinks, and children’s games contributed to the electric atmosphere of the evening. The student council’s popular booths raised a significant amount of money to help with their future projects. The highlight of the evening was the exciting dragon dance followed by a spectacular display of fireworks marking the end of bad luck and misfortune in 2011 and awakening the sleeping dragon which brings good luck in 2012.
