YEAR 5 & 6 RESIDENTIALS AT KANCHANABURI

23 January 2012

On a bright Monday morning in January a group of excited Year 5 and 6 children and their teachers began their journey to Kanchanaburi.  The purpose behind the visit was to explore and learn from World War 2 sites in the area, linking with topic work from the previous term. During the two day trip the children visited Hellfire Pass, the Thailand Burma Railway Museum, Donrak Cemetery and The Bridge over the River Kwai. Various activities were undertaken at each site from drawing and sketching to poem writing and fact finding in the museums. The children were interested to learn how the war affected Asia; much of their previous learning had been about the effect of the war in Europe. Our guides from the Tradios Three Generations Barge project were able to answer all questions thrown at them knowledgeably and also taught the children the best way to toast a marshmallow! The trip was a fanatastic learning experience and a great way for the children to experience history rather than just reading about it in a book. - Kathy Selby, Yr6 Homeroom Teacher
