Why student wellbeing is important for academic success

Why student wellbeing is important for academic success

The world in general is taking the subject of mental health more seriously than ever before, and the emotional wellbeing of our children is one of the most important areas of this issue. In today’s modern world young people face many new concerns that might cause them anxiety, including the never ending presence of the online world that delivers a whole host of challenges that need to be dealt with.

Research shows that while mental health issues in children are rising, general wellbeing is deteriorating, and the effect of this on a child’s education can be very damaging.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines mental health as ‘a state of wellbeing in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community’.

It is no longer wise to ignore studies that show wellbeing is intrinsically linked to a child’s motivation, and how it increases academic achievement and reduces disciplinary problems. When a student feels positive and happy their attention span improves, they become more creative and they enjoy the learning process more.

Positive wellbeing is therefore vital to help students to cope with the challenges of academic study, and considerably helpful for individuals wishing to thrive within their school environment.

Research shows that happy people:

  • live longer
  • succumb to fewer illnesses
  • stay married longer
  • commit fewer crimes
  • produce more creative ideas
  • work harder and better on the job
  • make more money
  • help others more

St. Andrews S107 & student wellbeing

At St. Andrews International School, S107 we take the wellbeing of our students very seriously and consider it essential to ensure that each child is able to reach their full potential in every aspect of their education. Our faculty understands that a positive wellbeing will benefit a student’s productivity, how they behave in the classroom, and how they relate to their teachers and their classmates.

St. Andrews S107 is an international school with a diverse and inclusive community that offers the perfect environment for fostering the wellbeing of students. Our personalised learning approach to teaching, which aims to customise learning specifically for each student, also shows that we are able to care individually about the children in our care.

Via a combination of an inclusive environment, personalised learning programme, incredible facilities and strong safeguarding policy, the students of St. Andrews Sukhumvit 107 can be constantly and consistently supported in relation to every aspect of their wellbeing.
