English as an Additional Language (EAL) at S107

Language Proficiency Pathways

With a rich international community representing over 40 nationalities, S107 warmly welcomes students for whom English is not their first language. We celebrate this diversity and offer a comprehensive, academically rigorous English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme.

Our EAL programme is entirely distinct from our neurodiversity and learning support provisions. It is specifically designed to create the optimal conditions for language acquisition, equipping international students with the fluency necessary for full participation in school life.

Language Proficiency Pathways

To ensure targeted support, we personalise our instruction based on each student's current stage of language development:

New-to-English Learners (Intensive)

  • Focus: Foundational language acquisition and functional communication.
  • Support: Intensive, structured support designed to build core vocabulary, basic conversational fluency, and fundamental literacy, allowing students to safely transition into their school routines.

Learners Developing Proficiency (Intermediate/Standard)

  • Focus: Academic language enhancement and curriculum accessibility.
  • Support: Targeted scaffolding and contextualised language support within content areas, helping students expand their academic vocabulary, refine complex sentence structures, and achieve independent mastery of the curriculum.

Our Approach to Language Learning

At our school, our approach to language learning is guided by the following core principles:

  • Cognitive Growth Beyond Language: Critical thinking is not confined to a single language. Additional language acquisition occurs alongside a student’s cognitive development across all academic subject areas.
  • Collective Responsibility: Every teacher is a teacher of language. Our entire faculty shares the responsibility of supporting students on their journey towards English proficiency.
  • Inclusive Classrooms: Immersing students in meaningful, interactive learning within language-rich mainstream classrooms provides the optimal environment for natural language acquisition.
  • Collaborative Teaching: Joint planning and co-teaching strategies between mainstream educators and EAL specialists create the most supportive framework for student achievement.
  • Personalised Learning Journeys: Language development is unique to each individual. We work closely with students and families to personalise every student’s journey.
